In the pursuit of silky, effortlessly smooth, and shiny hair, you have options.

At Sassy Hair, we’re all about exceptional and fabulous (frizz-free!) hair. And we’re often asked about the difference between two of our smoothing treatments, Keratin Smoothing Treatment and Hair Botox.

This post will talk about Hair Botox and Keratin Hair Smoothing treatments providing you with the advantages of both, the time commitment, aftercare instructions,  and more. All to help you make the hair smoothing treatment decision-making process, well, smoother.

What is a Hair Smoothing Treatment?

Hair smoothing treatments are semi-permanent and performed in a salon by a professional stylist to make your hair soft, smooth, and shiny.

The main difference is that a keratin treatment seals in liquid keratin to your hair  using heat. In contrast, hair botox is a deep conditioning treatment.

Keratin Hair Treatment

But first, what is keratin? Keratin is a structural fibrous protein found in hair, nails, and skin.

When you think of keratin treatments, you may think of the Brazilian Blowout.  At Sassy Hair, your safety is our top concern, so our treatments are formaldehyde-free.

Keratin hair treatment is a semi-permanent hair smoothing service that temporarily seals liquid keratin into your hair.

Hair Botox

When you think of wrinkles, you may think of botulinum toxin (Botox), a common prescription medication that some people use to smooth wrinkles. Just like your skin, hair loses fullness and elasticity over time. So, what about Botox for your hair?

Despite having Botox in its name, no Botox (botulinum toxin) is involved. Hair Botox is a deep conditioning hair treatment using ingredients such as Vitamin E, an amino acid complex, and collagen. It is designed to coat the hair with filler (amino acids, keratin, and collagen, for example), make it smooth, and reduce frizz.

The Benefits of Smoothing Treatments

Damage and frizz can be caused by tension and stress on the hair, heat styling, UV exposure, and the general duration of the strands on your head. Smoothing treatments can leave your hair healthy and shiny.

Now, with mask mandates, your hair is what stands out and gets noticed, and it’s your place to shine.

The solution? Smoothing treatments.

Let’s break down the benefits of each!

Keratin Hair Treatment

This treatment works to strengthen your hair to make it smoother, shinier, and healthier-looking. It can:

  • Cut down on blow-drying time
  • Create a lustrous shine
  • Lock out humidity
  • Repair damage and breakage
  • Seals in color

Hair Botox

Just like a topcoat for your nails, the main benefit is that it repairs damaged hair, adds moisture and shine, softens, and smoothes. Hair botox can:

  • Add moisture
  • Restore softness and shine
  • Smooth out your strands
  • Seals in color

Ideal Hair Types for Smoothing Treatments

Keratin Hair Treatment

A keratin treatment is best for:

  • Very curly and thick hair
  • Those who are looking for smooth, straight hair

Hair Botox

Hair botox is safe to use on any hair type. But is best for:

  • Bleached hair
  • Fragile, thin, or damaged hair
  • Those who are looking for shine .

Time Commitment and Cost

This all sounds so exciting! And by now, we’re sure you’re wondering how long will a hair smoothing treatment last?

Keratin Hair Treatment

The ideal time to book a keratin service is on its own, at least ten days before/after a color service.

Service time: 3-4 hours, depending on your hair length and density.

Process: The treatment is applied to damp, freshly washed hair then blow-dried and ironed without rinsing.

Cost: $200+

How Long Does it Last: Typically lasts 3-6 months depending on your lifestyle.

For Best Results: Use a sulfate and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner for long-lasting results.

Hair Botox

A hair botox treatment is a perfect add-on service to your cut and or color.

Service time: 3-4 hours/mins depending on your hair length and density.

Process: The treatment is applied and left to penetrate the stands for 40 to 60 mins. Then the hair is rinsed, blown dry, and straighten.

Cost: $200

How Long Does it Last: Typically lasts 2  to 5 months depending on how often you wash your hair.

For Best Results: The more often you wash your hair, the faster your results will fade. Avoid washing your hair and instead try a dry shampoo in between washes to preserve the results.

Because these treatments coat your strands, you want to avoid either treatment with 2 weeks of an upcoming color.

Aftercare

Keratin Hair Treatment

After your service, you want to avoid washing your hair for 72 hours to let the treatment settle in.  To prevent denting, avoid putting it in a ponytail for three days post-treatment.

Hair Botox

Water can break down the amino acids in the formulation, so after your service, you want to avoid washing your hair or excess sweat or contact with water for three days.
